Agrofloresta Café – Ecological coffee cultivation in Brazil using agroforestry

Kaffee gilt als Lieblingsgetränk der Deutschen. Doch bis er in unsere Tassen gelangt, hat er schon einen langen Weg hinter sich. Der weltweit größte Kaffeeproduzent ist Brasilien: Im Jahr 2024 wurden von dort 2,6 Milliarden kg Kaffee exportiert — und Deutschland war das führende Zielland.

Doch der Spitzenplatz im Welthandel hat nicht nur gute Seiten für das Brasilien. Industrieller Kaffeeanbau zerstört dort wichtige Ökosysteme, laugt Böden aus und treibt Kleinproduzent*innen in den Ruin. Doch es geht auch anders: Der Biologe Luiz Antonio Ramos hat in seiner Heimat Serra Negra im Bundesstaat São Paulo ein ökologisches Kaffeeprojekt gestartet, das auf dem Konzept der Agroforstwirtschaft basiert.

Wie genau das funktioniert und welche Vorteile Agroforstwirtschaft für die Kaffeekultivierung bietet, das hat sich unsere Kollegin Kathi vor Ort angeschaut.

Coffee is considered the favorite beverage of Germans. Yet before it reaches our cups, it has already traveled a long way. The world's largest coffee producer is Brazil: In 2024, 2.6 billion kg of coffee were exported from there — and Germany was the leading destination country. However, the top position in world trade doesn't only have positive sides for Brazil.

Industrial coffee cultivation destroys important ecosystems there, depletes soils, and drives small producers into ruin. But there's another way: Biologist Luiz Antonio Ramos has started an ecological coffee project in his home region of Serra Negra in the state of São Paulo, based on the concept of agroforestry.

Our colleague Kathi investigated on site how exactly this works and what benefits agroforestry offers for coffee cultivation.
